WINDSOR — Howard Donovan has arrived from England for a visit with his father, Dr. J.H. Donovan, of Windsor, and will be here for about one week. He will then go to New Haven, Conn. for a brief visit with his wife at the home of her parents and on Saturday, June 7, will sail from New York for South America. Mr. Donovan for the past two years has been in the United States consular service in London, but has now been transferred to similar duties at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mrs. Donovan did not come over from England with Mr. Donovan, as she was among the party of American women who were presented to King George and Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace Tuesday night, May 29, having remained over to attend that important function. Mrs. Donovan was a New Haven Conn. woman whom Mr. Donovan met when he graduated from Yale university...MATTOON — The transportation department team of the Illinois Central Railroad walloped the shops team on Saturday at Peterson Park by the score of 11 to 7. CHARLESTON — Former Coles County 911 Director Jack M. Abrams continued with his claims of innocence Tuesday when he was sentenced for an official misconduct conviction. As part of his sentence, Abrams was ordered to compensate the 911 system for $585.37 he charged to a 911 credit card during what was called a personal trip to Florida. "I still maintain that my trip to Florida was approved and authorized," he said after Tuesday's hearing. Abrams claimed that when he took the job as the county's 911 director in March 1996, he came into a "very hostile environment" toward 911 being implemented. "I came here to do a a job, and I put in a first-class system," he said. "I think some of the overflow from that hostility is the reason I'm here today."...OAKLAND — Hundreds of dollars in computer equipment were stolen from the Oakland grade school in two break-ins that might have occurred on consecutive nights. The first break-in at Lake Crest Elementary School occurred between Friday evening and early Monday morning, and the second occurred Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. Both were discovered by a custodian. Three hard drives, three keyboards, two printers and one monitor were taken from both third-grade classrooms, which are on the south side of the building. Forced entry was made through the classroom windows, Sanders said, and evidence was left at the scene...WINDSOR — Soon visitors to Windsor City Park will see major progress. Brightly colored playground equipment has been ordered. The park improvement committee awarded the playground bid Monday night during a special meeting. Roger Hutchinson & Associates, with Miracle Playgrounds in Troy, Michigan, was awarded the project, costing the city $55,000. Randy McQueen, co-chair of Project HOPE, a park improvement committee, said Miracle Playgrounds, has a good reputation locally, as it was worked with Charleston at Mattoon Parks. He added all three bids at equal cost were good.
